This week, July 21-27 2014 is National Pain Week, during which we bring attention to persistent pain and its effects on our quality of life and well being. One in three Australians over the aged of 65 suffer with Chronic Pain, with 50-80% of people suffering with chronic pain being undertreated. It is Australia’s third most costly health burden, and contributes to 40% of forced retirements. Untreated chronic pain can lead to significant human suffering, with the rate of depression being 20% higher in those suffering from chronic pain.
What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts beyond the time expected for healing following surgery, trauma or other conditions. This time varies depending on the condition. It can also exist without a clear reason at all.
What can I do about my pain?
Chronic Pain is a very common condition but, many people have limited access to or never seek treatment. Many people also experience difficulties accessing effective, evidence-based, treatments that teach them how to manage the impact of their pain on their day-to-day lives.
Some proven ways of reducing and managing pain include:
- Exercise
- Hydrotherapy
- Relaxation
- Pacing of activities
- Feldenkrais
- Correcting posture
- Assistive equipment
- Education – understanding your pain (Your most important tool!)
